TV Q&A: What’s Kelly Frey up to now?
Q: Has Kelly Frey talked about her career plans yet? I’ve not seen mention of it. I was thinking she was going to perhaps be working from home and/or maybe doing something with disabilities advocacy, considering her son is disabled. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
— Becky via Facebook
Rob: Frey, who departed WTAE-TV in November, did not respond to a message I left her, but I’ve heard from multiple folks who have been in touch with her that Frey is getting into real estate, possibly pursuing a real estate license and fixing up and reselling properties in her neighborhood.
Q: I, for one, will miss the national feed of PBS once WQED-TV updates their equipment. I find I actually enjoy not seeing the incessant cooking shows, the oft-repeated Pittsburgh-based shows and the never-ending begging for money. Being able to see “This Old House” in prime time, seeing “Motor Week” and other shows not carried by WQED has been fantastic. Do you know if there is a way to watch the National Feed of PBS instead of WQED’s schedule? When I go to PBS.com it forces me to select a location and that automatically gives me the PBS feed.
— Paul, Pittsburgh
Rob: My understanding is once WQED’s failed equipment gets replaced and the station returns to its own program schedule, the national PBS feed will no longer be readily available in Pittsburgh.
Q: What happened to the studio furniture at WTAE-TV? I’ve noticed that everyone on the morning news is standing awkwardly in an empty studio with not a desk or chair in sight. Did the station forget to make payments and the furniture got repossessed? Must be tough to stand for three-plus hours and deliver the news.
— Joe, Center Township
Rob: After some images posted to social media showed the five-person morning news team that will be behind and around the desk beginning March 7, I thought perhaps the desk was away getting extended but a statement from the station said that is not the case.
“We are happy to report the Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 desk is alive and well!” the statement reads. “We are not getting ‘rid’ of it, nor are we extending it. The five ‘fit’ just fine, as this recent picture proves. We are using the next few weeks to test different shots, camera angles and ideas. Our morning viewers know they are family to us, and we think it’s great when they notice something is different.”
Q: Is “Court Cam” on A&E Network canceled or will it eventually return?
— Lucas, via email
Rob: The new season of “Court Cam” will return at 9 p.m. March 2 on A&E.
Q: I watch “Billions” on Showtime and have since its inception. Why can I watch each episode either the Saturday before it airs or on Sunday morning of the day it airs? Can you explain?
— Sheila, New Castle
Rob: Showtime started this practice in June 2018 as part of its streaming strategy, a bonus for subscribers to both linear (via on-demand) and OTT Showtime services.
