TV Talk: Michael Keaton on ‘SNL,’ ‘Sunday Night Football’ this weekend

Pittsburgh native Michael Keaton will make multiple appearances on NBC this weekend, beginning with hosting “Saturday Night Live” (11:30 p.m. Saturday, WPXI-TV) and continuing Sunday as part of the cinematic opening sequence (around 8:17 p.m. Sunday) for the New York Jets-Pittsburgh Steelers game on “Sunday Night Football” (coverage starts at 7 p.m. Sunday, NBC, Peacock).

In his monologue Saturday night on “SNL” Keaton noted it is the show’s 50th year and when it premiered he was working as a production assistant on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” at WQED in Pittsburgh, given a shout-out to the local PBS station .

“‘SNL’ and ‘Mister Rogers’ had a lot more similarities than you would think: A lot of puppets, tons of cocaine,” Keaton said to guffaws from the studio audience. “Anyway, Fred [Rogers] was a great guy, everything you thought he was.”

Keaton, who’s starring in the movies “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Goodrich,” touts his Pittsburgh roots in the “SNF” opening.

“When you’re from where I’m from — Western Pa., just outside of Pittsburgh, like a 15-minute drive to the stadium … football is kind of in your blood,” Keaton says. “The Steelers unite us all. And no matter where you end up. It’s like it’s always part of your identity, you know? Now tonight, the circus comes to town. I don’t mean any disrespect, or to demean any new, big acquisitions, but if you know, you know, and so I think I can say with authority that all is not right in Gotham. You do realize the Steelers have had three coaches in the last 55 years, and the Jets have had two in the last two weeks. There aren’t enough things that unite us anymore. Come to Pittsburgh, you’ll see how great it is when something does that.”

Keaton’s “SNL” gig will mark the actor’s fourth time hosting the show. Billie Eilish will be the show’s musical guest.

“I think I can say with authority, that all is not right in Gotham.”

Apple TV+ renewed “Shrinking” for a third season.

Adult Swim renewed “Rick Morty” for two more cycles, keeping the show in production through at least its 12th season.

“Project Runway” is on the move again: After seasons that debuted on Bravo and Lifetime and Bravo again, the fashion design competition will move to Freeform for its 21st season. A host, judges and premiere date were not announced.

AMC canceled “Parish” after a single season.

Former “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams will host one-night-only election night coverage (5 p.m. Nov. 5) on Amazon’s Prime Video, that will be made available on Amazon.com even for those who do not subscribe to Amazon Prime or Prime Video. … Following his “Everybody’s in L.A.,” Netflix ordered a weekly variety talk show fronted by John Mulaney to stream next year.
