TV Talk: Streamers, cable schedule plenty of midseason new, returning series
With the hangover of the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes in the rearview mirror, streaming and cable outlets have plans to debut dozens of new and returning series through April, including:
“Missing You” (Jan. 1, Netflix): Author Harlan Coben’s latest book to get adapted is a five-part limited series about a detective (Rosalind Eleazar) whose fiancé disappeared 11 years earlier — then she sees his image on a dating app.
“Conspirators” (Jan. 2, ALLBLK): Thriller about a group of friends who seek the truth in a friend’s shooting and disappearance.
“Lockerbie: A Search for the Truth” (Jan. 2, Peacock): Based on the true story, a father (Colin Firth) seeks justice for the death of his daughter in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
“Shafted” (Jan. 3, Netflix): French series about four middle-aged male friends in modern-day Paris.
“On Call” (Jan. 9, Amazon’s Prime Video): Executive producer Dick Wolf’s first scripted streaming series follows a Long Beach, Calif., training officer (Troian Bellisario, “Pretty Little Liars”) on patrol with her trainee (Brandon Larracuente, “The Good Doctor”).
“The Pitt” (Jan. 9, Max): Pittsburgh-set medical drama starring Noah Wyle.
“American Primeval” (Jan. 9, Netflix): Set during America’s westward migration in 1857, this TV-MA-rated show depicts the brutality of the land amid a clash of cultures.
“The Couple Next Door” (9 p.m. Jan 17, Starz): New neighbors get sexually involved with the couple next door, including a traffic cop played by Sam Heughan (“Outlander”).
“Prime Target” (Jan. 22, Apple TV+): Eight-episode thriller about a math postgrad (Leo Woodall, “The White Lotus”) on the verge of a breakthrough when he finds himself amid a conspiracy.
“Thundermans: Undercover” (7 p.m. Jan. 22, Nickelodeon): Live-action, half-hour spinoff from 2013-18 Nick series “The Thundermans” focused on Phoebe (Kira Kosarin) and Max (Jack Griffo) as they go undercover in a beach town.
“Whiskey on the Rocks” (Jan. 22, Hulu): Swedish political satire inspired by the true story of a submarine that ran aground in 1981 in a Swedish military area.
“Shared Custody” (Jan. 24, Disney+): Spanish-language comedy-drama about a couple who separate but remain friendly for the sake of their daughter.
“Paradise” (Jan. 28, Hulu): Sterling K. Brown reunites with “This Is Us” showrunner Dan Fogelman for this drama about a murder in a serene community.
“Common Side Effects” (11:30 p.m. Feb. 2, Adult Swim): Two former high school lab partners discover a cure to all ailments in an animated comedy from Mike Judge and Greg Daniels (“King of the Hill”).
“Love You to Death” (Feb. 5, Apple TV+): Spanish-language rom-com about two friends who begin an unlikely romance.
“Cassandra” (Feb. 6, Netflix): Six-part thriller about a German electronic home assistant with dark intentions.
“Clean Slate” (Feb. 6, Prime Video): Eight-episode comedy about an Alabama car wash owner (George Wallace) whose former “son” returns home as a trans woman (Laverne Cox).
“I Am Married… But!” (Feb. 14, Netflix): 12-episode comedy about married life.
“A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story” (Feb. 17, Britbox): True crime drama about a London club manager on trial for the murder of her abusive boyfriend.
“Win or Lose” (Feb. 19, Disney+): Pixar’s first animated comedy series for streaming follows eight characters as they prepare for a championship softball game.
“Zero Day” (Feb. 20, Netflix): Robert De Niro makes his streaming debut as a former U.S. president charged with finding the perpetrator of a cyber-attack in this limited series.
“A Thousand Blows” (Feb. 21, Hulu): “Peaky Blinders” showrunner Steven Knight created and wrote this 1880s-set drama about London’s bare-knuckle boxing scene.
“Berlin ER” (Feb. 26, Apple TV+): Drama set in the busiest emergency room in Berlin.
“House of David” (Feb. 27, Prime Video): Biblical drama about the ascent of David (Michael Iskander).
“Daredevil: Born Again” (March 4, Disney+): Sequel to the 2015-18 Netflix show with star Charlie Cox returning as the title character.
“Lost Boys Fairies” (March 4, Britbox): Story of gay adoption set in Wales.
“Deli Boys” (March 6, Hulu’s Onyx Collective): Pakistani-American brothers take over their father’s convenience store and learn of his secret criminal life.
“Douglas Is Cancelled” (March 6, Britbox): Hugh Bonneville (“Downton Abbey”) stars in writer Steven Moffat’s satirical miniseries about gender politics, cancel culture and trial by social media.
“Dope Thief” (March 14, Apple TV+): Based on Dennis Tafoya’s book, this crime drama follows Philly friends who pose as DEA agents to rob a house, inadvertently unraveling the biggest hidden drug corridor on the East Coast.
“Ludwig” (March 20, Britbox): Mystery about Ludwig (David Mitchell, “Peep Show”) and his sister-in-law (Anna Maxwell Martin) after Ludwig’s brother goes missing.
“The Residence” (March 20, Netflix): Screwball whodunnit from Shonda Rhimes set in the White House starring Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Bronson Pinchot, Susan Kelechi Watson and Mary Wiseman.
“Side Quest” (March 26, Apple TV+): Anthology spinoff of “Mythic Quest” about how employees, players and fans are impacted by the Mythic Quest game.
“The Studio” (March 26, Apple TV+): A comedy starring Seth Rogen, who also wrote and directed, as a Hollywood movie studio executive in an era of diminishing returns (aka now).
“Your Friends and Neighbors” (April 11, Apple TV+): Jon Hamm stars as a divorced, disgraced hedge fund manager who resorts to robbing his wealthy neighbors in this drama from writer Jonathan Tropper (“Banshee”).
“Government Cheese” (April 16, Apple TV+): 1969-set comedy about a father (David Oyelowo) who gets out of prison, throwing his family’s life into upheaval.
