Where to watch your holiday favorites

Original local holiday TV specials have been in short supply in recent years but with so many traditions canceled this year due to covid, there’s a welcome new gift under the Christmas TV programming tree: Pittsburgh CLO’s “A Musical Christmas Carol” starring Richard Thomas will air on WQED-TV at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10, 9 p.m. Dec. 18 and 24 and at 1 p.m. Dec. 17. “A Musical Christmas Carol” will also be available to stream at WQED.org Dec. 11-31.

Richard Thomas (“The Waltons”) stars as Ebenezer Scrooge in a production recorded at Pittsburgh’s Byham Theater in 2018. In addition to the TV airings, Pittsburgh CLO will offer virtual pre-show and post-show event packages ($75-$175).

Munhall native Gabby Barrett and country duo Dan + Shay (featuring Wexford’s Dan Smyers) will be among the performers on “CMA Country Christmas” (9 p.m. Nov. 30, ABC).

On Christmas Eve, WQED-TV premieres a televised edition of its digital music series, “WQED Holiday Sessions” (8 p.m. Dec. 24), featuring performances by Americana artist Jon Bindley, singer/songwriter Avid Diamond, hip hop performer INEZ, electronic violinist Tomi Adebayo and jazz singer Etta Cox.

KDKA-TV’s “Pittsburgh Today Live” personalities Heather Abraham and David Highfield will host a one-hour broadcast New Year’s Eve, “Highmark First Night Pittsburgh” (11 p.m. Dec. 31 on KDKA, replacing the late news). The program will feature fireworks and the raising of the Future of Pittsburgh Ball.
