All aboard the Carnegie Science Center's train celebration
Get on track at the Carnegie Science Center’s “Locomotion Weekend,” a two-day celebration of all things model trains.
The North Shore museum is hosting its holiday season’s family fun finale Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can operate trains and bring their trains for a free checkup by the “Loco Doctor,” which includes basic repairs, cleaning and oiling.
They can see the museum’s iconic Miniature Railroad & Village, which in November added a Kaufmann’s Department Store model to the exhibit, a replica of “The Grand Depot.”
Patty Everly, who has been curator of historic exhibits for 28 years, remarked at the time that Kaufmann’s has a unique place in Pittsburgh history, culturally and historically. “It is so ingrained in Pittsburghers’ memories,” she said. “We did a lot of research, some at the Heinz History Center, and through that decided to include cherry wood ceilings, a Swarovski crystal chandelier and the recognizable windows.”

In addition to the miniature railroad, guests can enjoy train displays from Fort Pitt Hi-Railers, Pittsburgh Garden Railway Society, Train Collectors Association, Train Collectors Association’s Fort Pitt Kids Club, The Loco Doctor, South Hills Model Railroad Club, Peters Township D.A.R.E. Model Railroad Club, Steeltown “N” Scalers sponsored by Esther’s Hobby Shop and Pennsylvania Trolley Museum.
This event is included with general admission.
