Bushy Run speaker series highlights Jacobites
Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society Inc. will host “The Jacobites: History and Culture,” as the second in its 2019 History Speaks Series.
The Thompson Highlanders, under the direction of Sara Jean and Paul Thompson, will present the program at 7 p.m. June 19.
The audience will learn the history of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, efforts to restore James Francis Edward Stuart to the British throne and its resulting influences on the culture of the Scottish people.
Dance, music and visuals will help give the audience a complete picture of being a Scot, according to the museum.
“I have had the privilege of hearing the Thompsons speak and watching their dancers perform previously, and they are absolutely incredible. They do a marvelous job at presenting the history of the Jacobites and immersing their audience in Scottish history and culture,” says Maxine Ruble, museum education committee volunteer.
The Thompsons have been involved in the Scottish community in Western Pennsylvania most of their lives. Both teach Highland dance and piping. Paul Thompson is president of the St. Andrew’s Society of Pittsburgh.
The program will conclude with light refreshments.
Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
Future series presentations include “Distilling Whiskey” on Sept. 18 and “Sheep to Shawl” on Oct. 16.
