Here are 5 things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend, Oct. 10-12
If you’re an animal lover, a music or film nerd, a history buff or just looking for a good time, Pittsburgh’s got lots to offer in the next few days. Here’s just a sample of what’s going on around town this weekend.
International African Penguin Awareness Day
Pittsburgh is a town that loves penguins. On Saturday, the National Aviary is celebrating one particular species of penguin — the African penguin — with a day of activities that are included with general admission to the North Side institution.
Your best black-and-white outfit is recommended for this event, which will include the chance to watch special feedings and hear expert talks about these fascinating flippered creatures. There will also be a Penguin Discovery Zone and a chance to learn about the 18 worldwide species of penguins.
The day will also include a scavenger hunt, games and crafts. Head over to the Aviary on the North Side between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday to enjoy all things penguin. See the schedule for the day at aviary.org.
Go Fourth Pittsburgh
This weekend will see the launch of a new smartphone-based tour of Fourth Avenue, the “old Wall Street of Pittsburgh.” For a $10 donation to Mission of Mercy, real-life experts will provide a tour of this interesting section of Pittsburgh’s geography and history.
See the places where Pittsburgh’s industrial tycoons built and shaped our city, where civil rights champions stood, art left its mark and much more. The tours will begin next to Dollar Bank at Smithfield Street and Fourth Avenue, and the historic Dollar Bank will also be open with docents for tours.
Make sure to check out the Go Fourth Pittsburgh free smartphone tours starting on Saturday as well. Find tickets for Saturday’s in-person tours here and check out the smartphone tour at gofourthpittsburgh.org.
Science Center 21+ Night: Monster Murder Mystery
Head out with your friends to the Kamin Science Center on the North Side for the monthly 21+ Night on Friday. This month’s theme is the seasonally appropriate Monster Murder Mystery.
You’ll be tasked with solving a spooky murder at the Frankenstein wedding while also enjoying themed cocktails, the history of monster lore, real-life CSI demos, a peek at some horror video games with a local developer and the kid-free run of the full Science Center for exploration.
Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members. This thrilling party will run from 6 to 10 p.m. Get your tickets at kaminsciencecenter.org.
Hispanic Heritage Celebration
It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, and the Andy Warhol Museum on the North Side is celebrating on Saturday.
The day-long event will include musical performances in The Warhol Theater from noon to 12:45 p.m. and from 2 to 3 p.m., as well as Spanish language tours through the whole museum and a chance to get a glimpse into Warhol’s process with screen printing in the afternoon.
The celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Andy Warhol Museum on the North Side. To learn more, visit warhol.org.
‘Lysistrata: A Woman’s Translation’
This weekend, Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse offers a peek at a classic Greek play with a new twist. Aristophanes’ infamous work about women taking the reins and rebelling against the status quo takes on new life in the hands of their Conservatory Theatre Company with a new adaptation. The show may contain adult themes.
Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Pittsburgh Playhouse Rauh Theatre in Downtown Pittsburgh. To get tickets, visit playhouse.pointpark.edu.
