Taking a page from the book of its sister station WDVE, WXDX (105.9) will count down the top 420 alternative songs of the 1990s with its July 420. (WDVE’s much beloved Memorial Day 500 relaunched in 2019 and continued this year.)
Nirvana helped bring alternative rock to the mainstream with their “Nevermind” album in 1991, so “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a strong contender for the top spot.
Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy,” the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge,” Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” are likely to be near the top, too.
And then there’s the Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, U2, R.E.M. … and the list goes on.
You can add your top 10 at the X’s web site.
For some possible contenders, check out these lists by Pop Matters, Ranker and the Atlantic.
