Reports are pouring in that Britney Spears has been arrested.

According to TMZ — the publication that broke the story first — the ’90s pop superstar was arrested in Ventura County, California, on Wednesday for a DUI.

California Highway Patrol apprehended and handcuffed Spears around 9:30 p.m., TMZ reported. She was later booked by the sheriff’s department around 3 a.m., and released several hours later.

A native of McComb, Mississippi, Spears is well-known as a teen pop idol the world over, first gaining attention for her iconic “Baby One More Time” video. She has since been deemed the Princess of Pop, churning hit after hit well into the 2000s.

However, Spears unfortunately became the much-covered subject of tabloids and the paparazzi. She most notoriously ended up in a conservatorship in 2008, sparking the “Free Britney” movement that helped to dissolve the motion in 2021.

Neither authorities nor Spears have released a statement at this time.

Variety states that Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
