Canadian radio station played Rage Against the Machine song on unbroken loop, announces format change
A Canadian radio station played a continual loop of a Rage Against the Machine song in efforts to playfully announce a big change.
KiSS RADiO 104.9, a soft rock station in Vancouver, Canada, started playing the song “Killing in the Name” by Rage on Wednesday morning and continued on an unbroken cycle.
Listeners who called in and tried to request a song change were denied as the unrelenting song was run for another round on the air.
This unusual occurrence caught the attention of some social media users who speculated the reason behind the interminable ballad, debating whether it was a form of protest or if the change was due to a possible genre or format change forthcoming from the station.
I also tuned in just in time to hear the last time they played Killing In The Name. They’ve rebranded to call themselves Sonic instead of Kiss, and play alternative instead of soft rock. Mystery: solved. #Vancouver #radio

“Killing in the Name,” which was released in November 1992 by Rage Against the Machine on their title album, was inspired by the Los Angeles riots and the issues of police brutality happening around the time.
The song on KiSS RADiO 104.9, had been steadily rolling on a loop, playing hundreds of times with seemingly no end in a stunt to garner attention before a format change.
After the final selection of the song was played around 9:15 a.m. EST. Thursday morning, the station announced online that KiSS RADiO’s broadcasts in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley area would be ending, as a new alternative music station took over the spot.
The new station SONiC RADiO released information informing their new audience of the coming changes from their genre to the announcement of several new radio show debuts.
