Dan + Shay didn’t let their time in quarantine go to waste.
The country pop music duo just released a new song, “I Should Probably Go To Bed,” on July 31 that was recorded during the coronavirus pandemic.
Dan + Shay is comprised of Shay Mooney and Wexford native Dan Smyers, a 2006 North Allegheny graduate.
The piano-driven song reminded the duo of their early days working together.
“Shay started singing some crazy vocal stuff, and I was like, ‘I’m so inspired, let’s go upstairs (to my studio),’” Smyers told People. “The studio is an extra bedroom in the house with a mattress leaning against the wall and pillows on the floor. It’s not glamorous, very DIY. But Shay started singing and it was just like we were feeding off each other’s energy like we had done in the beginning of our career, before we had all kinds of things on our calendar.”
Smyers told Rolling Stone he had been listening to the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” album and studied the vocals when they were last on tour.
“That inspired me more than anything,” Smyers told Rolling Stone. “Over the course of releasing records, you evolve into your sound. You find what your lane is, be it at country radio or just in the music marketplace. And for us, the vocals are the thing. As much as I practice, I’m never going to be a great guitar player or a savant musician, but I can arrange vocals really well.”
Dan + Shay have hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts three times, with “Speechless” in 2018 and “Tequila” and “10,000 Hours” with Justin Bieber in 2019.
The duo was scheduled to perform Sept. 26 at PPG Paints Arena, but their tour has been postponed until 2021 with no official date set yet.
