'Happiness' has Jonas Brothers back in Pittsburgh tonight
The Beatles, One Direction, the Jonas Brothers — all hot young bands whose members ended up going their separate ways.
Unlike the other two, the Jonases have reunited, released a new album and produced a documentary that looks back at their careers, the challenge they’ve had in being taken seriously — and the trio’s breakup and reconciliation.
They’ve gone back on the road, too, and will play PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Sept. 3.
The tour, backing up the “Happiness Begins” album released June 7, is hitting 40 cities across North America. It’s the first Jonas tour since the 2012-13 world tour. Opening acts this time around are Bebe Rexha and Jordan McGraw.
The new album was preceded by the single, “Sucker,” proving that the former teenage pop-rock heartthrobs are all grown up. The song’s video, set in an opulent country estate, features the lines, “You say the word and I’ll go anywhere blindly. I am a sucker for all the subliminal things no one knows about you” — and a scene with one of the brothers hanging awkwardly in some sort of bondage contraption.
It features the sibling trio’s real-life wives. Nick is married to actress Priyanka Chopra. Joe’s spouse is actress Sophie Turner. Kevin and his wife Danielle were featured in the E! reality show, “Married to Jonas.”
Respectable showing
The new album has met with generally favorable reviews, like this one by Olivia Horn for “Pitchfork” magazine: the collection of R&B/funk/reggae-tinged songs is “a respectable showing from a group that has long deserved more respect than they’ve received.”
The Jonases have covered a lot of entertainment ground in their relatively young lives. Starting out as fresh-faced punk rockers playing East Coast malls, the three moved on to recording pop music and starring in Disney Channel movies “Camp Rock” and”Camp Rock 2” and the series “Jonas.”
Prior to their hiatus, the group had released four albums and, in 2008, was nominated for the Best New Artist award at the 51st Grammy Awards and named Breakthrough Artist at the American Music Awards.
Group members pursued solo projects during a 2010-11 hiatus, reformed in 2012, then announced another break-up in 2013. Amid reports of tensions among the brothers, they all turned again to other pursuits. Nick and Joe continued to make music — Joe’s projects included funk-pop group DNCE — while Kevin focused on his wife and two daughters.
‘Enjoy this time’
In a May interview in “Wonderland” magazine, the Jonases discussed how the whirlwind of fame took a toll on them professionally and personally in their relationships as brothers. Nick was the one to say it was time for a break.
“It definitely was a really difficult thing to hear,” Joe told the magazine. “We were all so invested in doing this for as long as we could see, but there was real benefit in him making that decision. We didn’t see it at that point, but time would tell that it was really important for us to call it quits.”
A slow rebuilding of their sense of brotherhood finally opened the door to working together again, and having fun in the process. It also led to the aforementioned career retrospective documentary, “Chasing Happiness,” that premiered June 4 on Amazon Prime Video.
“In the current state of the world, everything is so serious all the time, and it’s nice to be put out of that for a minute and just enjoy the fun. That’s kind of where we’re at,” Kevin said in the interview. “We’re looking at life in such a fun way right now, so let’s enjoy every moment! Let’s celebrate the littlest wins and the biggest wins and just enjoy this time together.”
