Brrr! It’s been a chilly week and it’s only going to get colder from here. It’s tempting to just curl up with a blanket and the streaming show of the week, but wouldn’t it be more fun to attend some of these events? Check them out.
Phipps Holiday Magic
Gear up for the quickly approaching holiday season with the opening of Phipps Conservatory’s Holiday Magic display, starting on Friday. This winter months’ tradition is always a great time for the whole family.
This year’s theme is “Wild Winter,” showing up in whimsical displays and animal topiaries throughout the conservatory. Also take in breathtaking floral displays of orchids, poinsettias and more, and of course, the dazzling light displays that will be bigger and better than ever.
Timed tickets for the events are on sale at phipps.conservatory.org. Hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Phipps Conservatory in Oakland.
The Billy Price Band
Hometown soul staple Billy Price will heat up Club Cafe Saturday night in An Evening With the Billy Price Band. With more than five decades of music-making under his belt, Price has played some of the most legendary venues in the country and has been nominated for — and won — many music awards, both nationally and internationally.
The general admission show will be held at the recently reopened Club Cafe on the South Side. The Saturday night concert is 21+. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit clubcafelive.com.
Pittsburgh Opera’s ‘Fellow Travelers’
This opera is an intriguing examination of relationships and convictions under Joseph McCarthy’s Red Scare in the 1950s. Based on a 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon, “Fellow Travelers” follows two men working for the government who begin a clandestine affair and must navigate the increased scrutiny in Washington, D.C.
Featuring plenty of drama, fantastic music and a brilliant cast, this show will enthrall opera fans new and old. Performances will be held at the Byham Theater in Downtown Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. To learn more and get tickets, visit pittsburghopera.org.

There are a lot of unique ways to do yoga these days, from goat yoga to heavy metal yoga to drunk yoga. But most adorable of all is kitten yoga, which Pittsburghers can experience on Sunday.
The Humane Animal Rescue’s East Side Shelter will hold this relaxing event that pairs their (adorable and adoptable) kittens with yoga practitioners for a purrfect flow of poses. This is a beginner-level class, but make sure to bring your own yoga mat.

SouthSide Works Holiday Glow
This new holiday tradition will bring a festive atmosphere to the New Town Square at the SouthSide Works. With the tree lighting in the Town Square, they’ll kick off the holiday season and have a good time doing it.
There will be a spot to get hot chocolate, hot cocktails and mocktails; holiday crafts; DJ-curated music; caroling; and a visit from Santa, including photo opportunities. The event will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and Santa will appear at 5:15 p.m.
