Mick Jagger is turning 80 on Wednesday, and Pittsburgh radio station WYEP is celebrating with a collection of new, local band covers of classic Rolling Stones tunes.
“Pittsburgh’s Got Moves Like Jagger” will air throughout the day Wednesday, and a full hour special of Pittsburgh artists’ covers will air at 9 p.m.
The station received more than 20 covers of Stones songs from artists across Western Pennsylvania, including rocker Bill Toms covering “Miss You,” Morgan Erina singing “Wild Horses,” Forestry Division’s cover of “Sway,” and the Sweaty Already String Band’s bluegrass version of “Factory Girl.”
Pittsburgh staple Joe Grushecky even submitted a vintage Stones cover from a night when rock legend Bruce Springsteen sat in with the Houserockers, recorded at the former Nick’s Fat City on the South Side.
“I’m so excited to share all of the phenomenal performances of our region’s musicians, sharing their love for Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones,” said WYEP morning show host Joey Spehar, who curated the covers collection and produced the hourlong special. “It really shows the spirit of the community when we can team up on this.”
