Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, musicians pay tribute to Christine McVie

Bandmates, musicians and fans took to social media to express sorrow over the death of Christine McVie, vocalist, songwriter and keyboard player of Fleetwood Mac.

McVie’s soulful contralto helped define such classics as “You Make Loving Fun,” “Everywhere” and “Don’t Stop.”

She died Wednesday at age 79.

A statement by the band reads in part, “She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure.”

Stevie Nicks, the band’s other singer posted a hand-written note to social media saying she didn’t know McVie was sick and that she wanted to be in London. Nicks ends the note, “See you on the other side, my love.” Her note included the lyrics to “Hallelujah” by Haim.

Founding member Mick Fleetwood posted a note on social media saying “Part of my heart has flow away today … I will miss everything about you Christine McVie.”

Heart’s Ann Wilson said on social media “Christine was a gem. Soulful, classy and a beautiful songwriter.”

John Taylor of Duran Duran shared “So so sad to hear about Christine McVie an artist I held dear and close to my heart.”

Country singer Rosanne Cash shared on Instagram “Such a great songwriter, singer, and a beautiful presence in Fleetwood Mac. A truly sad loss.”

Hard rocker Sebastian Bach shared “One of the rare musicians who can honestly say her voice was around us more than ever at the time when she left us.”

Poison frontman Bret Michaels shared “What a tremendous loss to the music community. My deepest condolences to the family, friends & fans of Christine McVie.”

Joe Elliott of Def Leppard posted “a truly talented writer whose contribution to Rumours alone stands her head and shoulders above most.”

Singer Sheryl Crow tweeted “I am so sad to hear of Christine McVie going on to heaven. The world feels weird without her here.”

The band Garbage posted “Gutted to learn about the passing of Christine McVie. Just gutted. Songbird forever.”

Susannah Hoffs of The Bangles shared “Peace and love.”

Country star Jason Isbell wrote “Terribly sad news. Irreplaceable songs and a voice that was truly pure.”

Former president Bill Clinton acknowledged McVie and the band, ““Don’t Stop” was my ’92 campaign theme song … I’m grateful to Christine & Fleetwood Mac for entrusting us with such a meaningful song. I will miss her.”
