Musician Christine McVie attends the 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York on March 29, 2019. McVie, the soulful British musician who sang lead on many of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest hits, has died at 79.

Bandmates, musicians and fans took to social media to express sorrow over the death of Christine McVie, vocalist, songwriter and keyboard player of Fleetwood Mac.

McVie’s soulful contralto helped define such classics as “You Make Loving Fun,” “Everywhere” and “Don’t Stop.”

She died Wednesday at age 79.

A statement by the band reads in part, “She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure.”

Stevie Nicks, the band’s other singer posted a hand-written note to social media saying she didn’t know McVie was sick and that she wanted to be in London. Nicks ends the note, “See you on the other side, my love.” Her note included the lyrics to “Hallelujah” by Haim.

Founding member Mick Fleetwood posted a note on social media saying “Part of my heart has flow away today … I will miss everything about you Christine McVie.”

Heart’s Ann Wilson said on social media “Christine was a gem. Soulful, classy and a beautiful songwriter.”
