Cast members Ryan Dawson, Julia Shavel, Quinn Kubistek, Rebekah Whittaker and Katey Muzy rehearse for the Norwin High School Theatre Company fall production, “Sister Act the Musical,” running Oct. 24-27.

A convent is a good place to hide from a gangster ex-boyfriend.

How singer Deloris Van Cartier ends up there and what happens next will be revealed in Norwin High School Theatre Company’s fall production, “Sister Act the Musical.”

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 24-26 and 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at the high school, 251 McMahon Drive, North Huntingdon.

At first, worldly Deloris chafes at the cloistered life, but things change when she meets members of the convent’s struggling choir.

“She finds that many of the nuns at the convent are not that different from her, and that they are quite fun to be around,” according to a theater company release. “They help give her a bigger purpose in her life, showing her a genuine love and affection that was missing prior to her arrival at the convent. ‘Sister Act’ uses music to bring different communities, and lifestyles, together.”

With a cast and crew of 80 students, the production stars Jaelyn Taylor as Deloris, Gordon Landefeld as Curtis Jackson, Sam Cholodofsky as Eddie Souther and Kailee Scalise as Mother Superior.

Lauren Scheirer is co- director/producer, with Erin Shrader as co-director/ choreographer and Todd Leighty as technical director.

“ ‘Sister Act the Musical’ was chosen for our students as it is a great opportunity to showcase the talent here at Norwin,” Scheirer says.

The musical is based on the hit 1992 movie of the same name, which starred Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris. Music is by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Glenn Slater.

Reserved tickets are $12, or $10 for seniors/students. General admission is $8.

Tickets will be sold from 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 19 in the high school auditorium lobby. Tickets also are available at the door before each performance or online at nhstheatrecompany.com.
