The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform at “Lights On! A Three-Day Celebration of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District” from Sept. 9-11.

Heinz Hall opened on Sept. 10, 1971.

So, it’s fitting the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which makes its home at Heinz Hall, will perform on that date five decades later as part of “Lights On! A Three-Day Celebration of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District,” Sept. 9-11.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is collaborating with the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Public Theater and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to host live music and theater, which have been on pause for more than a year during the pandemic.

Shows will be held at the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership’s Allegheny Overlook Park on Fort Duquesne Boulevard, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Mobile stage at the Eighth Street parking lot at Penn Avenue and the Trust Oasis on Seventh Street.

The symphony will perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 10 on the Eighth Street Stage.

“From artists to audience, we can’t wait to be back together Downtown in the Cultural District,” said Melia Tourangeau, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. “In the new season, the Pittsburgh Symphony is thrilled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Heinz Hall as the home of the orchestra and as an anchor of the Cultural District.

“So, it is a perfect match to perform for a live audience and to be with our friends in the Cultural District and community on that special occasion,” Tourangeau said. “We are deeply grateful to the Regional Asset District for its unwavering support of libraries, parks and arts and culture organizations like the symphony, and, as one of the earliest participants in RADical Days, we’re honored to thank the public for its support with the RADical Days free concerts, including one in the fall after Heinz Hall reopens, newly freshened up.”

Lights On! also will mark the official kickoff to RADical Days, described as “an annual thank-you to the public with free admission, tours, performances and family activities offered by the organizations and attractions that are funded by the Allegheny Regional Asset District.”

RADical Days runs through Oct. 10. The schedule will be announced later this month.

Lights On! is sponsored by UPMC and UPMC Health Plan. Additional support is provided by The Heinz Endowments and Richard King Mellon Foundation.
