Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks is planning an all-female cast for its September production of “Julius Caesar.”
Female performers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities are needed to fill both male and female roles.
Cold-read auditions will take place 11 a.m.-4 p.m. April 27, with callbacks 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 28, at Frick Park’s Blue Slide playground sledding hill, at Beechwood Boulevard and Nicholson Street in Squirrel Hill.
Both Actors Equity Association and non-Equity actors are asked to email info@pittsburghshakespeare.com to schedule appointments.
Rehearsals will take place throughout August.
Directed by Elena Alexandratos, the 90-minute version of Shakespeare’s tragedy will run Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 7-29, in Pittsburgh city parks.
“PSIP is extremely excited about Elena Alexandratos’ all-female Julius Caesar,” says Jennifer Tober, PSIP founder and artistic director. “How timely and apropos to highlight and dissect the themes of female power, political tyranny, and the changing roles of women in politics and society.
“We all know that women are underrepresented in terms of salary and positions of power in the workplace and society in general, and so in hiring only women for this production of Julius Caesar, we are leveling the playing field a bit and pushing our agenda of working for equality for women and under-represented groups in the theater and beyond,” she says.
Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks has been offering free Shakespeare plays in Pittsburgh city parks since 2005. The 15th season features monthly Bring Your Own Bard themed readings and Week of Will from April 23-29, featuring a variety of events and performances around Shakespeare’s 455th birthday.
PSIP is a partner of Britsburgh, a nonprofit promoting British-American culture, history, education, tradition and trade in the Pittsburgh area, and part of the annual Britsburgh Festival, scheduled this year for Sept. 2-8.
