TV Talk: Cable, streaming still have stocked cupboards of new shows

While broadcast networks slowly roll out new and returning series, cable and especially streaming aren’t missing a beat, with highlights this fall that include:

“Wilmore” (Friday, Peacock): Comedian and writer Larry Wilmore, whose “Nightly Show” was rudely dropped by Comedy Central in the midst of the 2016 presidential campaign, returns with a new weekly rundown of current events and politics.

“The Amber Ruffin Show” (Sept. 25, Peacock): The “Late Night with Seth Meyers” regular gets her opportunity to offer smart, silly and always charming takes on the week’s news.

“Fargo” (9 p.m. Sept. 27, FX): For its fourth season starring Chris Rock, this series adapted from the 1996 Coen Brothers film focuses on warring mob families.

“The Walking Dead: World Beyond” (10 p.m. Oct. 4, AMC): The second sequel to the original zombie drama centers on young people who have grown up in a post-apocalyptic society.

“The Good Lord Bird” (9 p.m. Oct. 4, Showtime): This adaptation of the James McBride novel about a fictional enslaved child who joins John Brown (Ethan Hawke) and his crew of abolitionists in 1859.

“Deaf U” (Oct. 9, Netflix): A docu-series about deaf college students at Gallaudet University.

“The Haunting of Bly Manor” (Oct. 9, Netflix): From the producers of 2018’s “The Haunting of Hill House” — and featuring some of the same cast members in new roles — this time the story is a gothic romance inspired by Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw.”

“The Right Stuff” (Oct. 9, Disney+): Tom Wolfe’s book about the early days of America’s space program gets turned into an eight- episode miniseries.

“Helstrom” (Oct. 16, Hulu): Another series inspired by a Marvel comic book, this one follows the son (Tom Austen) and daughter (Sydney Lemmon) of a serial killer.

“The Undoing” (9 p.m. Oct. 25, HBO): Based on the novel “You Should Have Known,” this six-part limited series stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant as a couple whose lives are touched by tragedy.

“The Crown” (Nov. 11, Netflix): The fourth season of the British historical epic debuts.

“Animaniacs” (Nov. 20, Hulu): A reboot of the 1990s animated hit.

“The Stand” (Dec. 17, CBS All Access): A nine- episode adaptation of the Stephen King novel, this version will star Alexander Skarsgard and Whoopi Goldberg.
