Pittsburgh’s Planning Commission is considering a proposal to bring more than 200 new apartments to the city’s Strip District.

The proposed development would include two new six-story apartment buildings, each with vehicle and bicycle parking and amenities. One building would be on Smallman Street and the other would be on an adjacent property on 30th Street.

Hudson Companies has owned both parcels for two years, according to Jonathan Hudson, a principal and partner with the Mt. Lebanon-based development company.

One site is home to a vacant two-story building, while the other has a warehouse that’s been empty since 2017, according to Ryan Indovina of Pittsburgh-based Indovina Associates Architects.

The development would include one- and two-bedroom apartments. The buildings would have a combined 234 apartments.

Hudson said the goal is to complete the project in 2025. He did not say how much the project is expected to cost.

The Planning Commission is expected to vote on the proposed development at its next meeting in two weeks.

This is the latest in a slew of developments in the Strip District. The Planning Commission earlier this year approved plans for a development called The Brickworks, which includes 300 apartments and dozens of townhomes. Two other apartment buildings earned the commission’s approval late last year. Last month, the commission approved a master plan for a proposed development that would add residential and retail development to a 7.3-acre site near the 31st Street Bridge.
