A $62.5 million redevelopment project that will bring new apartments and townhouses to Pittsburgh’s Hill District is moving forward.
The Bedford Dwellings project, approved this week by the city’s Planning Commission, is being led by the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh-based Trek Development Group.
Plans include building 90 units along Colwell Street that will replace units at the Somers Drive site in the current Bedford Dwellings. The housing will be available to households making between 30% and 60% of the area median income, which is $66,400 for one person and more than $125,000 for a family of eight.
The project also includes 24 new market-rate units and nine additional affordable housing units, according to plans presented to the Planning Commission.
Plans also include public green space, a picnic pavilion, a ball court, a community room, offices and 76 parking spaces.
This is the first phase of a much larger project to revitalize the Hill District. A $50 million federal grant will allow officials to launch additional phases of the project, which is expected to include more than 800 housing units. It will replace all of the existing Bedford Dwellings units and create hundreds of additional housing units, officials have said.
The development team estimated that the first phase of work will be completed by September 2025. City Councilman R. Daniel Lavelle, D-Hill District, has said the larger project is expected to be completed over about six years.
