Amazon is cutting 14,000 jobs as it expands its use of artificial intelligence, though it’s unclear how the move will affect the Pittsburgh area.

On Tuesday, Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, announced the layoffs.

TribLive reached out to Amazon to learn how the decision might impact the Pittsburgh area on Wednesday.

Amazon spokeswoman Margaret Callahan declined to say which positions were cut, whether any Pennsylvania sites were affected, how many internal jobs are open to laid-off workers, or which departments were hit hardest.

Callahan said Amazon was unable to provide specifics about roles, teams and locations, and instead pointed reporters to Galetti’s announcement.

“Many of you have put significant effort into that work of strengthening your organizations by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and helping reduce bureaucracy,” the statement said. “The reductions we’re sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers and shifting resources.”

Pittsburgh has over 20 Amazon warehouses and distribution centers in or around the city in Sewickley, Imperial, Coraopolis and North Versailles, as well as a massive 1.1 million-square-foot warehouse in New Stanton warehouse, which opened in summer 2024 and employs about 600 people.

While Pittsburgh Amazon workers are not unionized, Teamsters Local 249 demonstrated on behalf of Amazon’s Findley Township location in December 2024, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

It was unclear on Wednesday if there would be any protests following Amazon’s announcement

Teamsters Local 249 President Kevin Schmitt could not be reached for immediate comment.
