Hillshire Brands Co. of Haltom City, Texas, has recalled 58,000,000 pounds of corn dogs and sausage on a stick products because they may be contaminated with pieces of wood embedded in the batter.

The products were packaged between March 17 and Sept. 25 of this year, according to an announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The corn dogs and sausage on a stick were sold online and shipped to retail and food service locations nationwide. They also were sold to school districts (not part of the National School Lunch Program) and Department of Defense facilities.

The FSIS said the problem was discovered after multiple consumer complaints, including five people who were injured.

The Hillshire Brands Company’s investigation revealed the wooden sticks entered the production process prior to product battering, the FSIS said.

The list of recalled products is lengthy - it includes Jimmy Dean and State Fair brands. Jimmy Dean products include french toast sausage on a stick and pancake and sausage on a stick and variations. The State Fair items are corn dogs - various franks wrapped in batter. You can see the entire list here.
