Carmi Express, the popular Pittsburgh soul food restaurant, announced it will close its brick-and-mortar location on the North Side.

Doors will officially close Dec. 12, according to social media posts on the restaurant’s Instagram and Facebook accounts.

“This decision comes with deep reflection, gratitude, and a heavy heart,” the post said. “Carmi has always been more than a restaurant — it has been a place of family, comfort, celebration and community.”

Carmi Express said in the post that closing the North Side location is a “bittersweet moment,” but it also marks a new chapter.

The soul food restaurant has been serving Pittsburgh homestyle Southern soul food for 13 years. It will continue to serve Pittsburgh — but through catering, private events, special collaborations and pop-ups, according to the post.

“From our original dining room full of laughter and live jazz to the takeout kitchen that kept the soul-food heartbeat alive on the North Side, we have been blessed by every customer who walked through our doors, every catered event we touched and every life we connected with along the way,” the post said.

Carmi Express said soul food is in its DNA, and that it’s not going anywhere despite the physical restaurant closing.

“We want to thank Pittsburgh for supporting us, loving us, celebrating us and standing by us through growth, loss, triumph and transition,” the post said. “You made Carmi what it is, and we are forever grateful.”
