The Giant Eagle Market District supermarket stands on Penn Avenue, as part of The Meridian mixed-use development, in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025.

Giant Eagle cut the ribbon Thursday on its newest Market District store in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood, the seventh location in the city for the upscale grocery store.

The store, at 6310 Penn Ave., is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. It offers curbside pick-up and delivery along with Giant Eagle’s Scan Pay Go system.

The store is just one element in the retailer’s recently announced Because It Matters business strategy for the coming years.

Giant Eagle plans to invest $100 million into creating a better shopping experience and augmenting its digital offerings while also renovating stores across its footprint.

The Because It Matters strategy involves three main areas, company officials said:

• Introducing savings-focused initiatives through the remainder of 2025

• Launching a seasonal pricing initiative, investing millions to help reduce prices on dozens of the most frequently purchased

• Improving overall quality and service through the hiring and training of specialists like certified butchers and bakers, and taking deliveries to its stores seven days a week to offer the freshest products possible

In addition to the East Liberty store, Giant Eagle plans to remodel a dozen locations and renovate and expand more than 60 in-store pharmacies.
