Krispy Kreme bakes up new 'kreme'-filled doughnuts

Krispy Kreme apparently believes its new doughnut is out of this world.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, on July 20, 1969, the doughnut maker is releasing new original doughnuts, filled with Classic Kreme and Chocolate Kreme.

It’s even released a tongue-in-cheek video linking the lunar landing and the doughnut launch.

The doughnuts “landed” earlier this week, and will be permanently available in the U.S., the company states.

And, as part of a special introduction, the doughnuts are free, one per customer, on June 22 at participating stores.

Unfortunately for those in Western Pennsylvania, scoring a free one will require a bit of a road trip.

The state’s only participating stores are in Clarks Summit and Scranton, both in northeastern Lackawanna County.

They come with color-coded icing, so you know which one to order.

The doughnuts might be rocketing into the stores a bit too soon. Some early samplers found an inconsistent amount of filling in their pastries.

Others expressed concern about potential diet damage.

At least one is throwing caution to the wind.

And one non-fan of filled doughnuts sees a silver lining in the new release.

I hate filled doughnuts. Who needs an uneven glob of jelly or cream inside an otherwise perfect pastry?

No word on whether or not the doughnuts will be available in stores that sell Krispy Kreme.

Anyone heading northeast for the weekend, set your GPS for Scranton or Clarks Summit. For the rest of us in the Keystone state, the new doughnuts are as elusive as, well, green cheese.
