The Oyster House in Pittsburgh’s Market Square today celebrates 150 years in business.
“I believe we have made it this far because we are unapologetically ourselves” said owner Jen Grippo, who took over the business after her father, Louis Grippo Sr., died in May 2017. “We do a few things well and we welcome everybody.”
Today’s special is $1.50 Iron City Beer with a food purchase and cupcakes from Bethel Bakery.
Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto joined the celebration shortly after noon.
The Grippo family is celebrating 50 years owning the business.
“I am nervous and excited because this means so much to my family,” said Jen Grippo. “I want everything to go well.”
The past seven months have been a wild ride because of the pandemic, she said, but the staff and the regular customers have continued to support the restaurant throughout this trying time — they’ve helped keep the fire of owning a business going.

They were the first customers to wish Jen Grippo a Happy Anniversary when they walked through the door. They ordered fish sandwiches.
“Everything is good here, from the food to the people,” said McCurley, who was wearing an Oyster House T-shirt. “I am glad it is still here.”
The landmark bar and restaurant has stood on the corner of Market Place and McMasters Way in Market Square since 1870. It is believed to be the longest continuously operating bar and restaurant in Pittsburgh.
“It just has a nice vibe to it,” MacDonald said. “It’s so cool and classic.”
