Pittsburgh pop-up bars herald classic Christmas tales
Fans of Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” and the nostalgic yet still relevant “A Christmas Story,” can enjoy some grown-up fun based on the popular books’ film translations.
The Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh University Place, 3454 Forbes Ave., says it is “stealing Christmas” with its Grinch-themed pop-up, open Dec. 6-21.
Hosted from 3:30 p.m. to close each day in the hotel’s mezzanine level lounge, the event will usher visitors into a Whoville family living room, Grinch’s Lair and other movie set re-creations.
Selfie stations will include life-size character cutouts, while guests can enjoy meeting — and perhaps being insulted by — the Grinch himself.
“Participants are encouraged to dress up for the event or wear their favorite ugly holiday sweater. We just can’t guarantee that the Grinch will behave when he sees your outfit,” says hotel manager Jill Curry.
Libations will include cocktails like “The Grinch,” “Jo Jo’s Jingle Juice” and “Max’s Mule,” along with “Who Pudding,” “Cheermeister” and “Arsenic Sauce” shots.
Guests can coat their stomachs with “Who Hash” (artichoke dip with toasted pita), “Toad Stool Sliders” (house-blended beef and portobello mushroom sliders), “The Sea Sick Crocodile Supreme” (loaded nachos) and “Cindy (Buffa) Lou-Who Dip” (buffalo chicken dip).
Sounds disgustingly delicious.

Don’t shoot your eye out
The Doubletree Hotel Green Tree, 500 Mansfield Ave., Pittsburgh, will give a nod to some of the most iconic scenes from “A Christmas Story” with its pop-up from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 19-20 in its Duquesne Room.
Movie-inspired, handcrafted cocktails will include “Major Award Cocktail,” featuring local beer with a twist; “Pink Nightmare,” with sparkling rosé and peppermint garnish; and “Oh Fudge,” with warm cocoa, Bailey’s Irish Cream and “red soap” bubbles to wash your mouth out.
“We want attendees to be transported into the movie. We expect a crowd of revelers to gather together in laughter and nostalgia as they enjoy this unique experience,” says Kristen Stewart, Doubletree’s director of catering.
To set the scene, vintage decor will feature the “leg lamp,” which delighted Ralphie’s father and horrified his mother; a Red Ryder BB Gun, Ralphie’s most heartfelt Christmas wish; and life-size movie character cutouts.
Just like cable television on Christmas Eve, the movie will stream continuously during the event.
Reservations are encouraged.
