Sushi Tomo opening a location on Pittsburgh's South Side
The sushi scene is rolling along in the South Side.
South Side resident and owner Keresty Kelly is expanding with a second location of Sushi Tomo in the former Little Tokyo Bistro along the East Carson Street business corridor.
A staff of nine, including Kelly, who does “whatever needs to be done,” will welcome diners at a public grand opening beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at 2122 E. Carson St.
Kelly previously worked as a server at the flagship Sushi Tomo in Ross and bought the eatery in 2017.
“I’m so excited about this. I live in the South Side. I love this neighborhood,” said Tomo, who grew up in Mercer County.
A dining-room focal point is a large, vibrant ocean wave mural painted by Pittsburgh-based artist Shane Pilster.
Fresh, quality sushi and authentic Japanese cuisine are the focus and Kelly has kept most of the menu the same from the former tenant, Little Tokyo Bistro.
Japanese favorites include beef teriyaki, chicken and other traditional dishes, including the ever-popular geisha roll ($17.95).
“It’s the most popular roll and is a menu staple with shrimp tempura and cucumber on the inside topped with tuna, avocado, caviar, spicy mayo and eel sauce,” Kelly said.
