Dunkin' delivers donations - and gifts - to regional shelters

Mary Pickels

In recognition of National Dog Day, Dunkin’ is helping out area animal shelters with donations of cash, bandanas and staff treats.

On Aug. 26, Alivia Chapla of the Savvy Group in Pittsburgh, representing regional Dunkin’ franchisee Heartland Restaurant Group, delivered a $500 donation to the Humane Society of Westmoreland County in Greensburg.

Along with the delivery came Dunkin’ logo bandanas for the dogs and doughnuts for the staff.

“These kinds of donations definitely benefit us. Every little bit helps. We have an enormous task here,” says Kathy Burkley, the society’s executive director.

In just the last weekend, the shelter took in two sick and abused dogs. Their care alone will cost $1,000, she says.

“This is what people don’t understand. Our expenses for these dogs are outrageous,” Burkley says.

Pointing out older dogs, or dogs who were starving or abused, she notes medical care, surgeries and long recovery periods often must be provided before dogs are ready for adoption.

“There is no end to what we do,” she says.

The shelter relies on fundraisers, grants and donations, Burkley adds.
