Here are 5 things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend: Sept. 12-14
As with every weekend, there’s so much going on in the Pittsburgh area in the next few days, from entertainment to sports to mouthwatering food and more. Here are just a few of the events to put on your radar.
Science Center (Re)Launch Day
The Carnegie Science Center — whoops, sorry, the Kamin Science Center — has been closed since Sept. 2 to prepare for its new name and new look. Now, they’ll be throwing open their doors again on Saturday to relaunch.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, free admission will be available to the public and free programs — including educational films at the Rangos Giant Cinema and programs at the Buhl Planetarium — will also be offered. Enjoy music from a DJ, a photo booth, a scavenger hunt at the Miniature Railroad and Village and more.
Then, looking toward the future, there will also be sneak peeks of future exhibits and features of the newly relaunching Science Center. Free admission tickets for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. must be reserved at carnegiesciencecenter.org.
‘A Beautiful Noise’
Fans of legendary music man Neil Diamond won’t want to miss this musical about the amazing journey of Diamond’s life, from humble roots in Brooklyn to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The musical features many of Diamond’s hits, from “Cherry Cherry” to “Sweet Caroline.” This show is part of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series.
Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday; at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday; and at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, all at the Benedum Center in Downtown Pittsburgh. For tickets, visit trustarts.org.
Pittsburgh County Fair
City dwellers deserve a trip to the county fair, too! This Saturday, a gathering to appreciate all things handmade, home-grown, local and fun will be held at Allegheny Commons Park West on the North Side.
The County Fair will include live musical performances, demonstrations, pony rides, a petting zoo, a local market, a selection of activity booths and more. Watch grape stomping and indigo dyeing, and check out the market for a variety of fun and local goods and services.
This year, there will be an apple pie bake-off, an urban backyard poultry show and more. Food options from a number of local businesses will be available as well.
The Pittsburgh County Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Allegheny Commons Park West on the North Side. For a full schedule and slate of vendors, visit fermentpittsburgh.com.
Pittsburgh Chinese Culture Festival
Gather on Saturday at Mellon Park for the largest outdoor celebration of Chinese culture in Western Pennsylvania. The event will include traditional and modern Chinese music and dance, a marketplace offering delectable and authentic cuisine, handmade crafts and other items, and hands-on activities including calligraphy, games and educational demonstrations.
The free and public event offers the whole community an opportunity to glimpse the culture of their neighbors and friends. This is the festival’s 10th year, and it is held by the Pittsburgh Chinese Cultural Center. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Mellon Park. Learn more at pghccc.org.
Alphabet Trail and Tales
This event will be a fun day for kids to foster a love of reading. On Saturday at the Frick Park Blue Slide Playground entrance, CitiParks will hold its 24th annual Alphabet Trail and Tales event.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., families can take part in storytimes, interactive sets, music, activities and more fun to explore the joy of stories. Plus, it’s a great chance to get outdoors, check out the park and meet your favorite storybook characters.
The event is free and fun for all ages. For more information, visit pittsburghpa.gov.
