Visitors to this year’s Fall Fantasy Parades at Kennywood Park can expect to see lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

The theme for the 70th year of the nightly parades, set for Aug. 3-20, is “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

More than 150 marching bands from high schools and colleges throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio will march the midways, accompanied by floats designed by the West Mifflin park’s art department depicting Munchkin Country, the gates to the Emerald City and more.

Parades begin at 7 p.m. nightly. Each parade will feature four to 12 bands.

“The parades serve as one last chance to soak up summer before the school year begins and see the region’s talented young people take center stage,” says Kennywood General Manager Jerome Gibas. “Fall Fantasy has become a wonderful tradition for Kennywood and our local communities,”

The parades began in 1950 as an effort to boost attendance in August, generally the slowest period of the season, according to Kennywood. Over the years, Fall Fantasy has evolved into one of the parks’ busiest events of the summer.

The last parade on Aug. 20 marks the end of Kennywood’s 2019 daily operating schedule. Beginning Aug. 21, the park will be open weekends, plus Labor Day, until Sept. 15.
