Once upon a time, the Ferncliff Hotel stood in the woods of Ohiopyle State Park, a resort for visitors until the 1940s.

As part of a new program called “Tree Measuring,” Ohiopyle State Park is seeking “citizen scientists” to help measure the park’s trees.

The Fayette County park has some of the state’s, and in some cases, the northeastern section of the nation’s, tallest trees, says Rose Fuge Bando, environmental education specialist.

Staff members need volunteers to measure and inventory the tall trees of the Ferncliff area to see how many of the park’s trees qualify for the National Register of Champion Trees.

A maximum of eight people can participate, and each must be at least 16. No previous ability is required. All instruments and equipment will be provided.

Pre-registration is required for the sessions planned for 1 p.m. Feb. 29 and 9:30 a.m. March 14 and March 19.
