Friday was officially game day at the Title 9 sports bar.
After a few months of pop-up events, the women’s sports bar in East Liberty is open.
“Our pop-ups were packed,” said owner Sherree Goldstein. “We wanted to get a feel for how this would be received and we also needed some time to finish remodeling the space. It’s been so much fun.”
Title 9 is the first establishment of its kind in Pittsburgh. Bars focused on women’s sports have popped up in other cities, which inspired Goldstein. This one is located on Centre Avenue next to Square Café, which Goldstein also owns.
Both share the same kitchen.
“This is a great day for women’s athletics,” said Karen Hall, of Highland Park, a Mount Alvernia and University of Nevada Las Vegas basketball star. “It’s such a resource for women’s sports. It’s incredible.”
Goldstein took inspiration from the common term for that law — Title IX — when choosing the name for her venture.
Title IX, a federal law, was passed in 1972, barring sex discrimination in government-funded education programs, including sports.
Goldstein recalled a time when there weren’t a lot of opportunities for women to play sports.
JoAnne Klimovich Harrop / Triblive Title 9 sports bar in East Liberty will host a grand opening at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 23.Most sports fans have had a women’s sporting event put on a television at an establishment, said Hall, who attended Title 9 pop-ups. Hall is the co-director of Ozanam Basketball, Inc., a program based at the Ammon Recreation Center in the Hill District that offers youth clinics, summer leagues, after-school programs, and mental health support.
“What Sherree is doing is a major breakthrough for the city of Pittsburgh,” Hall said. “It is one of the coolest spots in the city. It is welcoming and I love that it is for everyone and not just for women.”
That is what Goldstein, an avid cyclist, wanted. She said she wants everyone who comes into the bar to feel supported no matter what.
”We need more spaces that are welcoming,” she said.

It’s an all-ages place.
Title 9 has a full bar, eight televisions, a rooftop bar area, and garage windows.
The establishment will show local and nationally televised women’s sporting events from women’s football, college basketball, the WNBA, soccer, softball, and more — pretty much name any sport, and you can tune in at Title 9.
The standard menu will feature locally sourced ingredients and goods in its dishes with vegan options. The full bar will include non-alcoholic beverages.

A rooftop space will open later this summer.
With more television coverage of women’s sports, college basketball becoming popular, more women’s sports on social media and the success of local teams such as the Pitt volleyball team in the NCAA Final Four for a fourth consecutive time, the timing of Title 9 is perfect, Goldstein said.
“Viewership of women’s sports is skyrocketing,” Goldstein said. “We are so excited to officially open our doors. There’s been an incredible response to the pop-ups and the most inclusive and wonderful community that’s here supporting and watching women’s sports.”
Title 9 is located at 5997 Centre Ave., East Liberty.
Hours are 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Monday.
There will be a watch party for the Pittsburgh Passion at the D.C. Divas at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
