World of Wheels returns to Pittsburgh and it's 'pretty much business as usual'
The vehicles and celebrities aren’t the only stars of the show when Max Motive World of Wheels Custom Car and Hot Rod Show comes to Pittsburgh.
The venue is pretty special too, said Larry Way, public relations director for the exhibition presented by NAPA.
“It’s a gorgeous building,” Way said of the downtown David L. Lawrence Convention Center, where the 60th annual exhibition will take place this weekend.
Hours are 3-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.
“Of all the cities we go to, Pittsburgh is my favorite,” he said. “My first time coming through the (Fort Pitt Tunnel), I thought, ‘My goodness, this is a beautiful city — the lights, the rivers, the buildings.’ ” And the people are friendly, too, he added.
Even though it’s one of Pittsburgh’s first large-scale public events since the pandemic, the show will be “pretty much business as usual,” Way said. “The aisles are a little wider than usual, and we will be following all the rules set down by the city and the state of Pennsylvania.”
World of Wheels usually covers four exhibit halls on the convention center’s first and second floors. This year, a fifth hall on the lower level will be used to display exotic cars “that appeal to a younger demographic,” Way said.
“This will be our biggest show in years,” he added.
More than 500 classic cars and hot rods will be displayed. Thunder Roads Pennsylvania will present a special motorcycle section, along with a motorcycle fashion show at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Other special features include a pinball tournament and pedal car challenge.
Featured celebrities include:
• Sting, All Elite Wrestling star and member of the WWE Hall of Fame, 6-9 p.m. Friday
• Chip Foose, custom auto designer and host of television’s “Overhaulin,” noon-6 p.m. Saturday
• Lou Ferrigno, star of the iconic 1970s television show “The Incredible Hulk,” noon-3 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $19, or $7 for ages 6-12; younger children enter free. A discount of $2 is available with ticket purchase at participating NAPA Auto Parts stores.
Face masks are required and social distancing protocols will be in place.
The current World of Wheels tour is traveling to 14 cities, Way said.
