At a car cruise, usually the guys are the car enthusiasts and the gals are there to be companionable.

Not so for at least one couple at the 33rd annual Mt. Pleasant Cruise Night, held Aug. 16 in Frick Park.

“I’m the gearhead and he’s the chef,” said Marianne Caruso of the dynamic between her and husband Ron Caruso. “I’ll be downstairs polishing the car, and he’ll call down, ‘When are you coming up for lunch?’”

The Jeannette couple was showing off their calypso coral-and-cream 1955 Chevy Bel Air convertible, which comes with quite a story.

The couple had another Bel Air of the same vintage and color scheme when they were going together back in 1961. Years later, Marianne had a hankering to get another one. Searching the internet, she found one in Vancouver, Canada.

Ron needed a little convincing to go out and see it, but go they did, and the rest is history. It’s a regular driver, too, not just a show car, Marianne said, and it has an interesting back story.

The Bel Air once belonged to Richard Anthony “Cheech” Marín, half of the stoner comedy duo Cheech and Chong. Marin donated it to a California hospital, which auctioned it off, with the winner being the previous owner in Vancouver.

Dave and Bev Anderson of Acme were showing their fully restored 1963 Ford Fairlane Sport Coupe, which Dave says was a “stripped-out shell with trees growing up through it” when he found it in Arizona.

Ron and Mary Jane Zappone tooled up in a 1947 Chevy Sedan Delivery, one of their four 1940s-vintage Chevys.

Jim and Holly Crouse of Mt. Pleasant sat by their powder blue 1974 Dodge Challenger Rallye.

Ellen Ritenour of Donegal brought her bright red 2004 Volkswagen Bug, now officially a classic at 15.

Also seen: Mike and Annette Koehler, Joe Potocki, Renee Bann, Destiny Kingan, Gary Swarer, Mark and Lori Harr and Anthony and Joyce Dellgross.

The cruise night benefits the Mt. Pleasant Glass & Ethnic Festival, planned this year for Sept. 27-29. Cruise chairman is Rich Kujawa.
