With a hiking trail, picnic pavilion and a 45-foot waterfall, Buttermilk Falls Natural Area near Clyde, Indiana County, makes for a quick and scenic outing.
Steps leading to the base of the falls include several viewing platforms, and there is access to walk behind the falls at the bottom. The falls are a part of Hires Run, a tributary of the Conemaugh River.
Also to be explored are moss-covered stone foundations and retaining walls from an estate once owned by Fred McFeely, grandfather of Fred Rogers. McFeely, a wealthy Latrobe industrialist, owned the property from 1930 to 1956 and used it as a private retreat.
