Why is there a lighthouse in the middle of the Allegheny River in Forest County? Take the July 13 tour of the Sherman Memorial Lighthouse and find out.

Hosted by Tionesta Lions Club, the self-guided tour is set for 1-4 p.m. at the 75-foot, privately owned structure located on Lighthouse Island near Tionesta.

Completed in 2003, the lighthouse has six floors and a basement accessible by a 76-step spiral staircase, contains Sherman family and lighthouse memorabilia and provides views of the river and surrounding forested hillsides.

Admission is $5, $2 for ages 13-18, or free to younger children.

Public tours also are scheduled for Aug. 10, Sept. 14 and Oct. 12.
