Three people were transported to the hospital in critical condition Saturday, following a crash resulting from a vehicle driving the wrong way on Route 28.

The incident was reported just after 4 a.m. on Aug. 9 in the northbound lanes of Route 28 near the East Ohio Street and Chestnut Street exits.

An adult female driver began to drive the wrong direction when her car collided with another vehicle containing two passengers, a spokeswoman for Pittsburgh Police said Sunday.

Allegheny County 911 dispatch said the road reopened to traffic shortly before 6:30 a.m.

The northbound lanes of Route 28 were closed for about three hours, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

The Collision Investigation Unit responded to the scene. An investigation is underway.
