A man is recovering after being shot in the leg early Saturday at Market Square in Pittsburgh, authorities said.

Police were called at about 12:15 a.m. after reports of a fight that led to a shooting. Officers found the victim on the sidewalk, conscious and alert, with a gunshot wound, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials.

Bystanders and officers rendered aid, including a tourniquet, to the victim until medics arrived. He was taken by Pittsburgh EMS in stable condition to an area hospital.

Witnesses told police the victim and another man were fighting prior to the shooting.

The suspect fled on foot, witnesses said.

The Mobile Crime Unit recovered shell casings from the scene and is reviewing camera footage. The investigation is ongoing.
