One person was taken to the hospital after ammonia began leaking from a pipe at a produce wholesaler in the Strip District on Monday afternoon.

The city’s Hazardous Materials Team responded to Consumer Produce on 21st Street around 1:30 p.m. and determined that the leak occurred while repairs were being made, according to a Pittsburgh Public Safety Department spokeswoman.

The leak created a strong odor but did not pose a danger, authorities said.

No information was available about the condition of the person taken to the hospital.

Emergency crews were able to secure a loose pipe flange to stop the leak and worked with the building’s management to contain and clean up the liquid ammonia that spilled.

Monday’s incident was the third ammonia leak reported at the large cold-storage facility since December.

Crews responding to Consumer Produce on Dec. 11 were able to stop an ammonia leak on the building’s roof.

An ammonia leak also was reported at the building on May 4.
