8 kids, 3 adults injured in wrong-way crash on Route 28 in Shaler
Eight children and three adults were taken to local hospitals following a crash Monday night on Route 28 in Shaler, emergency officials said.
All of the injuries appeared to be minor, police said.
The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. near the Millvale exit of Route 28, according to Shaler police Chief Sean Frank.
He said the vehicle that entered Route 28 the wrong way was a Honda Odyssey minivan with an adult driving eight kids — ages 1 to 11. Four of the passengers were unrestrained, according to Frank.
The Odyssey struck a Ford Taurus with two adults.
The Odyssey “reportedly came from the 40th St. Bridge and either got in the wrong lane and traveled north in the southbound lanes or went down into Millvale and entered the Millvale off-ramp in the wrong direction,” Frank said in an email. “Either way, they were traveling north in the southbound lanes.”
Shaler police said there was no evidence of impairment in either driver, but charges are pending against the driver who went the wrong way. Frank said the driver of the Odyssey did not have a driver’s license.
Route 28 was shut down in the area for roughly two hours Tuesday morning, police said.
Frank said Shaler Hampton EMS coordinated with several other agencies and initiated their mass-casualty incident response, using ambulances from multiple services.
