Pittsburgh police on Friday arrested two men in connection with the 2022 killings of a 4-year-old girl and her mother.

The 4-year-old girl, Kaari Thompson, and her mom, Temani Lewis, 21, were shot Dec. 1 outside a Pittsburgh grocery store in the 1500 block of Lincoln Avenue. Thompson, a Pittsburgh Lincoln Early Childhood student, died at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Lewis was pronounced dead just a week later, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner.

Marquise Givner, 21, and Tarrell Jennings, 19, are charged with homicide in connection with the killings, police said.

Lewis, who lived in East Hills, had been scheduled to stand trial in connection with a separate shooting in 2022.

She had been scheduled to have a non-jury trial starting Jan. 23 in connection with the shooting of two people in Homewood on Aug. 4. She was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and firearms violations.

“There’s no reason a 4-year-old should be gunned down in our city, period,” Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey said at the time of Kaari’s death.
