Clairton City School District student will learn remotely for the rest of the week after police arrested two teens for wielding guns while school was being dismissed Wednesday.

Officers responded to Clairton Education Center on Waddell Avenue around 2:50 p.m. for a report of three males with firearms, according to investigators.

Two police officers already were at the building for the dismissal of students and directed responding officers to the three suspects, who ran off in different directions.

Police said both teens who were arrested, ages 14 and 17, will be charged as juveniles. The teens face various firearm charges along with making terroristic threats.

Both boys are on probation for previous offenses, police said, adding that their probation officers will be notified about Wednesday’s incident.

A 16-year-old boy also was detained by police.

Multiple law enforcement agencies set up a perimeter to conduct a search for weapons. An Allegheny County Sheriff’s K-9 unit was able to recover two guns from behind structures along the path of the fleeing suspects, police said.

Surveillance video of the incident was obtained from the school district along with other evidence that will be turned over to the Allegheny County investigators to determine what charges the teens will face.

District officials sent a letter to parents Wednesday saying the temporary switch to online instruction is being done so “we can ensure heightened safety protocols are established outside of the building.”
