5 things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend: Jan. 14-16
The weekend has arrived, including three days off for some with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. We’ve got some ideas of how to spend it.
Lace up your skates
CitiParks will host the annual “Mascot Skate” from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Schenley Park Skating Rink. This will be the 34th year for the event. More than 20 area mascots such as the Penguins’ Iceburgh, the Pirate Parrot and the Pitt Panther glide on the ice with skaters.
Limited tickets remain at $5 for adults, $3 for those 17 and under. They are available online only.

All aboard
The Carnegie Science Center on the North Side is hosting “Locomotion Weekend” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
There will multiple guest train displays from local hobbyists and train associations, such as the Duquesne Incline Association, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, Train Collectors Association, Fort Pitt Hi-Railers and STEELTOWN “N” Scalers.
Guests can also visit the science center’s Miniature Railroad & Village which recently added Gus & YiaYia’s ice ball cart. There are only a few more days to see “Rocky Mountain Express” at The Rangos Giant Cinema. It’s the story of the early age of steam-powered transportation.
It’s free with general admission of $19.95 for adults, $14.95 for seniors and $11.95 for children ages 3-12. Children 2 and under are free.
Face masks are required for those over 2 years old.

Trolls Live
”Trolls Live!” will perform at 1o a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh Uptown.
The show is described as a “hair-raising adventure” when Poppy, Branch and their friends come to life in their first live tour. The journey begins when the trolls’ hug time is unexpectedly put at risk.
Poppy and the rest of the Troll crew invite the audience into an interactive experience featuring popular Trolls songs, choreography, scenic projection, puppetry, media technology, special effects and surprises.
The cast features 14 professional performers from all over the U.S. “Trolls Live” runs for 70 minutes with a 15-minute intermission.
Tickets start at $18.
Masks are recommended for anyone older than 2.

Orchids and Bonsai
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show: An Ocean of Color opens this weekend. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
There will be vibrant displays of orchids of different shapes, sizes and fragrances, as well as fruiting and flowering bonsai trees.
The Garden Railroad: Bridges and Tunnels exhibit which features miniature recreations of iconic Western Pennsylvania scenes is also open as is the Winter Light Garden.
Tickets are $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for seniors and students over 18, and $11.95 for children 2 to 18 and must be reserved in advance.
Masks are required for all guests ages 2 and up.

On the road
This is the final weekend for The Pittsburgh RV Show, which is celebrating its 55th anniversary at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown. Nine acres are filled with everything from folding camping trailers to high-end motor homes. The show features more than 100 exhibitors and 13 dealers.
Hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and active military personnel, $5 for children age 6-16 and free for children 5 and younger.
Face masks are required for those unvaccinated and recommended for all visitors.

An evening of laughs

Comedian Jim Jefferies brings his Moist Tour to Carnegie Music Hall of Oakland at 7 p.m. on Friday.
The Sydney native was honored as Stand-Up Comedian of the Year at the Just for Laughs Festival in 2019.
His podcast “I Don’t Know About That with Jim Jefferies” is available on YouTube.
