A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in September 2023 for the new outdoor classroom at Pine-Richland’s Eden Hall Upper Elementary School in Richland. The school’s Parent-Teacher Organization is now asking to donate a pavilion to cover the classroom, at a cost of $56,000. The school board is expected to vote on accepting the gift at its Nov. 10 meeting.

An outdoor classroom at Pine-Richland’s Eden Hall Upper Elementary School is expected to get greater use thanks to a donation from the school’s parent-teacher organization.

The school board in November is expected to approve a donation from the PTO for the purchase of a cedar pavilion to be installed over the existing outside classroom, for a cost of about $56,000.

The outdoor classroom was established in the fall of 2023 through a partnership between the school, the PTO and The GOOD Fund, then known as the Pine-Richland Opportunities Fund.

The classroom was named “The GOAL Zone,” for “Grow Outside and Learn,” which was voted on by Eden Hall students.

The school, built in 2008, houses fourth through sixth grades.

“This space has become a meaningful part of our school community,” Principal Colleen Berezo said. “Our students and teachers use this space for hands-on learning experiences, outdoor reading sessions and even celebrations. It provides a natural extension of our indoor classrooms and supports our mission of fostering curiosity, creativity and collaboration in meaningful ways.”

PTO President Tanecia Redlinger did not respond to requests for comment about the pavilion donation.

According to a letter from the PTO to the school, the pavilion will be about 20 feet by 40 feet. It will be built by D ’n A Custom Home Builders and contractor Michael J. Perry. The $56,000 cost includes delivery, site preparation, all materials, assembly and installation on the existing concrete slab.

The pavilion will provide shelter for the outdoor classroom, which is sized to accommodate an entire classroom and instructor for outdoor lessons. It will not have electricity.

The roof will make the learning space more accessible throughout the year, Berezo said.

“Previously, classes could only use the space when weather permitted, and the lack of shade made it difficult to hold lessons during sunny or rainy days,” she said. “With this new addition, our students and staff will be able to engage in outdoor learning more consistently, regardless of the weather.”

The school board meets at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in the administration office at Pine-Richland High School. The board’s approval will be contingent on Perry getting needed permits from Richland Township.
