A Braddock man faces charges in connection with the near-fatal overdose of a 9-year-old girl.

William Davis III, 45, is facing charges including aggravated assault, drug possession and endangering the welfare of children, court records show.

The girl, who was found unresponsive in her bed on Nov. 28 by her mother, tested positive for heroin and street-manufactured fentanyl when taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case.

Davis had been staying at the girl’s house.

In Davis’ bag, police found three stamp bags of heroin, an empty methadone bottle in Davis’ name, and 56 whole and 16 cut-in-half Baclofen 10 mg pills, the complaint said. Baclofen is a prescription-only skeletal muscle relaxer and there was no prescription container for Baclofen in Davis’ belongings, police said.

Police said the stamp bags found on the girl’s bed matched ones found in Davis’ overnight bag and in a Mountain Dew can near the girl’s bed.

A doctor told police in a Dec. 7 report that the girl’s injuries as a result of the overdose “were characterized as maltreatment causing bodily injury through any recent act or failure to act,” according to the complaint.

Davis was taken to Allegheny County Jail on Tuesday for his arraignment. A preliminary hearing had not been scheduled as of Wednesday afternoon, court records showed.
