Allegheny County adds 288 covid cases, 9 deaths

Allegheny County on Friday reported 288 additional cases of covid-19, bringing the total to 77,803 since the pandemic began.

The county’s seven-day case average, currently at 238, has remained below 300 cases since Feb. 9.

Of the new cases, 185 were confirmed via 864 new PCR tests and 103 are listed as probable, according to the Allegheny County Health Department. One of those tests was more than a week old.

The dates of the positive tests ranged from Jan. 20 to Thursday.

Health officials define a probable case as one in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or covid symptoms with a “high-risk exposure” to someone who has been confirmed to have coronavirus.

The county recorded an additional nine covid-related deaths, bringing the total to 1,697 since the pandemic began. Three of the newly added deaths were in December. One death was in January. Three deaths were in February. Two deaths were in March.

Five of the additional deaths were associated with long-term care facilities. Three people were in their 60s, three in their 70s and two in their 80s. One person was in their 90s.

There are currently 165 patients in the county hospitalized for covid-19. The seven-day average of hospitalizations has steadily trended downward to 170 after being above 700 at the start of the year.

A total of 5,142 Allegheny residents have been hospitalized for covid over the past year, according to the Allegheny County Health Department.

The county has 126,986 people with their first dose of a covid vaccine and 84,759 fully vaccinated, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
