Allegheny County adds 33 covid-19 deaths to total
Allegheny County reported 33 more covid-19 deaths Wednesday, according to the county’s Health Department.
The newly reported deaths range from Dec. 19 to Monday, with four of the deaths occurring in December. The county attributed some of the new deaths to data imported by the state from the Electronic Death Reporting System. The death toll now stands at 1,495, according to the county Health Department.
Of those deaths, two were people in their 50s, eight in their 60s, five in their 70s, eight in their 80s, nine in their 90s and one over 100, with 14 of the deaths associated with long-term care facilities.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 19 additional deaths in the county, bringing its total to 1,555. The ongoing discrepancies between the two health departments hasn’t been fully explained.
According to state Department of Health data, 899 of the county’s deaths are associated with nursing and personal care homes. Based on those state numbers, nearly 58% of the county’s deaths have been associated with those care homes. Among 160 facilities, there have been 5,262 cases among residents and 1,566 cases among employees.
The county also added 328 additional cases, with 184 confirmed from 934 new PCR test, leaving 144 probable cases. Allegheny County became the second county in the state to surpass 70,000 cases, reaching 70,165. Only Philadelphia has more, with 105,369.
The new cases stem from test from Jan. 25 to Tuesday, with the county reporting only three of the positive tests as more than a week old. Those cases ranged from 3 years to 96 years, with a median of 40. Here’s how the new cases — 174 male and 154 female — break down in age:
- 0-4: 3
- 5-12: 14
- 13-18: 19
- 19-24: 32
- 25-49: 135
- 50-64: 70
- 65+: 55
According to the state’s covid-19 dashboard, there are currently 304 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the county, the same as Tuesday. The county has 1,183 ventilators, with 280 in use, 43 by covid-19 patients. There are 80 coronavirus patients in Allegheny County ICUs, with 15.8% of county ICU beds available.
The county’s seven-day average for new cases lowered to 297, the lowest since 276 on Nov. 11.
